"Family reunions are very big business," said Louise Jones, the head of research services at the Ohio Historical Society. "They are part of what is called heritage tourism. A lot of companies market to that, like reunions.com."

About 60 descendants of James Seneca Tyler, the first black clerk of the Ohio House of Representatives and an early settler of central Ohio in the 1800s, gathered in Columbus for a family reunion in 2005. The Ohio Historical Society helped with reunion activities and hopes to work with more families in the future, Jones said.
